Cambodia has requested Laos to accelerate the transfer of electricity to the country as fast as possible, under an agreement signed by both governments in March, to ensure stable energy supply in the Kingdom.
H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, made the request here on Tuesday while holding a bilateral talk with Ambassador of Laos to Cambodia H.E. Amphay Kindavong.
Cambodia consumed 2,650 megawatts of electricity last year – about 15 percent higher than 2017, and of the 2018 power consumption, 442 megawatts were imported from Thailand, Vietnam and Laos.
According to H.E. Minister, to address the shortfall, Cambodia is building 700-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Preah Sihanouk province, and 240-megawatt solar power plants in the provinces of Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang and Pursat, which will be put into use this year and next year.
Cambodia has also bought two big generators from Finland and Germany to further ensure power supply security, mainly in Phnom Penh capital city, H.E. Pan Sorasak said.
From his part, H.E. Amphay Kindavong lauded Cambodia’s fast progress and economic growth, and pledged to help coordinating the electricity transfer from Laos to Cambodia.
