Cambodia Officially Launches “Digital Platform for Onboarding the Informal Economy”

The “Digital Platform for Onboarding the Informal Economy” was launched here this morning under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet.

Addressing the launching ceremony, the Prime Minister said that this is an important progress in the implementation of the “National Strategy for Informal Economy Development 2023-2028”, the fourth priority policy programme of the Royal Government of the 7th legislature of the National Assembly, which he announced to implement at the end of 2023.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet stated that today’s achievement reflects the efforts and attention of the Royal Government to supporting and facilitating citizens who are engaged in occupations, work and have businesses in the informal economy, as well as creating opportunities for them to develop and expand their businesses, especially to improve their living standards and well-being.

The Premier also encouraged all citizens engaged in informal business to register, and instructed the concerned authority to facilitate the registration without complexity.

This registration is the commitment to know what people in the informal economy are doing, that is, to get to know them better, he underlined, explaining that it is not designed to make it easier to collect taxes.

H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation and Chairman of the Coordinating Committee for the Development of the Informal Economy, said that in order to achieve the vision of transforming Cambodia into an upper middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050, promoting the informal economy development is a priority and essential task to enhance competitiveness and boost economic diversification with the goal of reducing poverty and social inequality.

According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), informal economy is pervasive in Cambodia. Some 88.3 percent of workers are engaged in informal employment.
