Cambodian National Assembly President, Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, has urged the Asian Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (AFPPD) to increase its operations in Cambodia, aiming to bolster public well-being across the nation.
The request was made during a meeting with AFPPD Executive Director, Dr. Farrukh Usmonov, at the National Assembly Palace here on April 1.
Dr. Usmonov and his delegation were in Cambodia to attend the Regional Parliamentary Seminar on “Demographic Changes and Non-Communicable Diseases: Policy Responses to Challenges for Active Citizens and Youth,” hosted by the Cambodian National Assembly on Mar. 31.
Samdech Khuon Sudary emphasised the significance of AFPPD’s involvement and the participation of international development partners in the seminar, highlighting the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing regional challenges beyond non-communicable diseases. She stressed that collaborative efforts are essential for finding solutions to pressing issues.
Dr. Usmonov expressed his gratitude to the National Assembly President for her time and acknowledged Cambodia’s active participation in the seminar. He praised Cambodia’s progress since his first visit in 2012 and reaffirmed AFPPD’s commitment to supporting the National Assembly’s public health initiatives. Notably, AFPPD plans to host a forum on elderly care in Cambodia this May, strengthening ties with the National Assembly’s Commission 8.
Samdech Khuon Sudary commended AFPPD for its role in facilitating discussions among Asian parliamentarians on critical issues such as health, gender equality, youth, and aging populations. She acknowledged the longstanding cooperation between AFPPD and the Cambodian National Assembly, noting the active involvement of Lok Chumteav Lork Kheng, a current National Assembly member and AFPPD treasurer.
The National Assembly expressed its appreciation for AFPPD’s support in promoting health and social well-being, particularly through the recent regional forum.
Samdech Khuon Sudary suggested that Cambodia could serve as a regional hub for AFPPD’s initiatives, enhancing collaboration among parliamentarians in the Mekong region.
“The AFPPD platform is crucial for dialogue, knowledge exchange, and capacity building, contributing to a better future in Asia,” she stated.
She concluded by underlining the importance of international cooperation in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and improving public well-being.
