The Kingdom of Cambodia and the European Union have fortified their strategic alliance to combat plastic pollution, following the inaugural Steering Commission meeting for the PlasticSmart Cambodia Project held on Tuesday.
The meeting, co-chaired by H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Cambodia’s Minister of Environment, and H.E. Igor Driesmans, EU Ambassador to Cambodia, marked a significant step in aligning national and international efforts to address the global plastic waste crisis.
The commission endorsed the project’s 2026 action plan and budget, charting a course for enhanced governance, increased recycling rates, and the mobilisation of sustainable investment to mitigate plastic and microplastic pollution.
In his remarks, Ambassador Driesmans commended Cambodia’s sustained environmental efforts. “The European Union stands firmly with Cambodia in this critical endeavour,” stated Ambassador Driesmans. “Our continued support will focus on strengthening waste management systems, promoting a circular economy through recycling, and leveraging investment to ensure a cleaner environment for all Cambodians.”
For his part, Minister Eang Sophalleth detailed the Royal Government’s comprehensive, multi-phase strategy, which has already galvanised millions of citizens. He reported that over 14 million people have pledged to the “Today, I Do Not Use Plastic Bags” campaign. Furthermore, more than 7 million participants in the “Clean Cambodia” and “Clean National Roads” movements have contributed to cleanliness rates exceeding 80 percent in key areas.
“Plastic waste is a transboundary challenge demanding global cooperation. Our partnership with the EU is pivotal in scaling up Cambodia’s national response,” said Minister Sophalleth. He also outlined practical measures being implemented, including the distribution of household waste segregation bins and the development of environmentally sound disposal sites to protect public health.
The Minister concluded with a call to action for development partners and stakeholders to align with Cambodia’s environmental sector strategy, which prioritises cleanliness, green growth, and long-term sustainability.
