Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on Thursday morning inaugurated a US$30.6 million water treatment plant in Svay Rieng province, funded by the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Speaking at the ceremony, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet expressed his deep appreciation to Japan for its continued support under Cambodia-Japan cooperation.
“This is a new achievement for the people of Svay Rieng, and I hope the province will continue to attract more development projects,” he said.
The newly inaugurated plant has a production capacity of 6,800 cubic metres of clean water per day, raising the total capacity of the Svay Rieng Water Supply Authority to 22,600 cubic metres per day. The project also expands the water distribution network by 110 kilometres and provides access to clean water for an additional 7,378 households, including 375 vulnerable families.
H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, said the new facility and supporting infrastructure will enable the Svay Rieng Water Supply Authority to significantly expand service coverage. Water supply access in its service area—covering Svay Rieng City and five communes in Svay Chrum district—is expected to increase from 32 percent to 58 percent.
On the same occasion, the Prime Minister also presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of water supply infrastructure in five provinces: Svay Rieng, Pursat, Kampong Thom, Kampot, and Mondulkiri.
The expansion project is expected to increase clean water production capacity by approximately 13,600 cubic metres per day, extend the distribution network by 739 kilometres, and provide new connections to 28,660 households. The project is scheduled for implementation over 20 months, from March 2026 to September 2027.
