Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation H.E. Prak Sokhonn has highlighted Cambodia’s strong commitment to ASEAN and its continued role in advancing regional cooperation, marking the 27th anniversary of the Kingdom’s accession to the bloc (April 30, 1999 – April 30, 2026).
In a congratulatory message issued on April 30, H.E. Prak Sokhonn underscored the enduring importance of ASEAN’s founding principles, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-use of force, and the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law. He noted that these principles have enabled ASEAN Member States to coexist peacefully and foster a region built on dialogue, cooperation, and mutual trust, especially amid an increasingly uncertain global landscape.
Reflecting on Cambodia’s 27-year membership, the Minister described ASEAN as an indispensable platform that has supported the country’s national development and elevated its voice at both regional and global levels. Through active participation in ASEAN Community-building efforts, Cambodia has expanded trade and investment opportunities, strengthened regional connectivity, enhanced supply chain resilience, narrowed development gaps, and promoted science, technology, and innovation.
At the same time, Cambodia has made meaningful contributions to ASEAN’s growth and integration. Since joining the bloc in 1999, the Kingdom has chaired ASEAN three times and played an active role in advancing regional dialogue, reinforcing ASEAN centrality, and promoting cooperation across political-security, economic, and socio-cultural pillars.
Looking ahead, H.E. Prak Sokhonn reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to working closely with fellow ASEAN Member States to realise the ASEAN Community Vision 2045. He emphasised the importance of strengthening unity and centrality within ASEAN while building a more inclusive, resilient, and people-centred community that leaves no one behind.
