Cambodia and the Export-Import Bank of China (China EXIM Bank – CEXIM) have discussed strengthening financial cooperation and investment in strategic infrastructure projects, including the Funan Techo Integrated Water Resources Management Project.
H.E. Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), held a courtesy call and working discussion with a high-level CEXIM delegation led by Mr. Chen Huaiyu, Chairman of the Board of Directors, on Tuesday morning.
During the meeting, H.E. Sun Chanthol expressed gratitude for China’s longstanding support for major infrastructure development in Cambodia, describing China as an “Ironclad Friend”.
He also updated the delegation on progress on the Funan Techo project and outlined a vision to develop an economic corridor along both sides of the project and connect related infrastructure networks.
The development aims to strengthen Cambodia’s transport and logistics competitiveness while giving priority to environmental protection and biodiversity, with benefits for communities living along the canal, according to the CDC.
H.E. Sun Chanthol also informed the delegation about Cambodia’s upcoming investment Roadshow in Xiamen and Shenzhen and supported a proposal by Mr. Chen to co-organise a joint investment promotion and attraction forum. The forum would seek to attract investors to the economic corridor along the Funan Techo project.
He reaffirmed the Royal Government’s commitment to improving Cambodia’s business and investment environment and making the country a more competitive investment destination in ASEAN.
Mr. Chen said CEXIM remained interested in the Funan Techo project after studying it and observing its progress. He said Cambodia-China relations had continued to deepen through strong friendship and political commitment.
The chairman also highlighted Cambodia’s political and macroeconomic stability, together with its strong relationship with China, as key factors supporting sustainable development.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening financial cooperation and investment to support socio-economic development and improve living standards in Cambodia and China.
