The Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to Cambodia offers that his country could be a mediator for a peaceful talk over the ongoing border issue between Cambodia and Thailand if wanted, while supporting the option to refer the case to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The Indonesian diplomat, H.E. Dr. Santo Darmosumarto, floated his views on the options in a press conference at his Embassy in Phnom Penh on Jun. 4.
Both Cambodia and Thailand are members of ASEAN and friends of Indonesia, he said, adding that Indonesia therefore encourages peaceful resolution between the two countries and the country stands ready to support as a mediator if Cambodia and Thailand request.
The Ambassador meanwhile expressed his support for the option in seeking the resolution of the border dispute through the ICJ, emphasising that his country and neighbouring Malaysia used to apply the approach.
H.E. Dr. Santo Darmosumarto also shared his view on a regional option for the resolution through ASEAN by filing a request to Malaysia, which is currently the rotating chair of the association.
President of the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ) Mr. Puy Kea highly valued Indonesia’s contribution to Cambodia’s peacebuilding since the Cambodia national conciliation to end its civil war as well as Cambodia-Thailand border tension in the past.
Indonesia deployed about 4,000 troops to maintain peace in Cambodia through the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) and stood out among other ASEAN countries in supporting peacebuilding in Cambodia, he added.
