Cambodia, World Bank Partner on Sustainable Waste Management and Ecotourism

Cambodia and the World Bank are strengthening their collaboration on sustainable waste management and the development of ecotourism, key priorities for the Kingdom’s environmental future.

H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, met with Ms. Tania Meyer, World Bank Country Director for Cambodia, on June 4, 2025, to outline joint initiatives.

Ms. Meyer praised Minister Sophalleth’s leadership in advancing Cambodia’s environmental agenda, reaffirming the World Bank’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Environment. This partnership aims to enhance community well-being, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Cambodia’s “Clean, Green, and Sustainable Environmental Strategy.”

In response, H.E. Eang Sophalleth expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s ongoing support, highlighting the Cambodia Sustainable Landscape and Ecotourism Project (CSLEP). This project seeks to position Cambodia as a premier ecotourism destination through the development of nature trails, cycling routes, visitor centres, and eco-lodges, with a particular focus on the Phnom Khnang Phsar site.

The Minister also emphasised the critical need for improved waste disposal infrastructure, calling for the construction of well-designed, durable solid waste landfills. He stressed that such facilities are essential for protecting public health and the environment, ensuring sustainable development for both Cambodia and its development partners.
