Cambodia Cites South Korea as Development Model, Eyes Expanded Education Links

Cambodia has taken South Korea as a model for its development, particularly in education, which is seen as a key sector for strengthening people-to-people ties, Cambodian diplomat to South Korea said.

Cambodian Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, H.E. Khuon Phon Rattanak, made the remarks during a meeting on Mar. 23 with a delegation from Jungwon University led by its Rector, Mr. Jang Kiwon, at the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Seoul.

The ambassador expressed appreciation to Mr. Jang Kiwon for organising a recent outreach session with Cambodian seasonal workers who had arrived in South Korea the previous week. The event enabled embassy officials to provide essential information to help the workers adapt to living and working conditions during their employment.

H.E. Khuon Phon Rattanak underscored the importance of education in Cambodia’s development strategy, noting that the country views South Korea’s progress in the sector as a model. He described education as a crucial pillar for enhancing mutual understanding and fostering closer ties between the peoples of the two nations.

He also thanked Jungwon University for offering scholarships to Cambodian students and requested consideration for expanding scholarship opportunities, including in specialised fields, vocational training, and short-term courses.

Mr. Jang Kiwon welcomed the proposal to increase scholarships for Cambodian students and expressed gratitude to the embassy for facilitating links between the university and three key Cambodian ministries in the past.

He also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation with the Royal Embassy of Cambodia.
