In a meeting on Wednesday with South Korean Ambassador H.E. Kim Chang Yong, Acting Senate President H.E. Ouch Borith underscored that the robust partnership is the fruit of the vision and active efforts of Cambodian Acting Head of State Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
He noted that Samdech Techo Hun Sen was instrumental in restoring diplomatic ties between the two nations in 1997, leading to the current strategic partnership.
H.E. Borith emphasised that Cambodia and South Korea share a solid friendship with immense potential for further expansion, both through bilateral frameworks and inter-parliamentary cooperation.
The acting Senate leader expressed his gratitude to the South Korean government and its people for their continued support of Cambodia’s development through various initiatives, including Official Development Assistance (ODA), the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), and the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF).
Highlighting the importance of parliamentary diplomacy, H.E. Borith noted that under Samdech Hun Sen’s leadership, the Cambodian Senate aims to further boost engagement with the South Korean National Assembly. This includes strengthening parliamentary friendship groups, increasing exchange visits, and enhancing coordination mechanisms to ensure more effective outcomes.
He further expressed a desire to elevate the relationship from a “strategic partnership” to a “comprehensive strategic partnership.”
For his part, Ambassador Kim Chang Yong praised the pivotal role played by Samdech Techno Hun Sen in nurturing and promoting bilateral ties. He noted that the upcoming 30th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations in 2027 will serve as a significant milestone to elevate the partnership to a new level.
