The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism have launched a joint campaign to boost sustainable river tourism and reduce plastic waste along the country’s waterways, with financial backing from the Coca-Cola Foundation.
Under the initiative titled “Promoting Sustainable River Tourism and Reducing Plastic Waste Across Cambodia’s Waterways,” the campaign aims to tackle the growing impact of plastic pollution on the nation’s rivers, the UNDP said on Wednesday.
Single-use plastics generated by tourism activities and daily consumption have increasingly affected waterways, damaging ecosystems, harming local communities, and diminishing the visitor experience, the UNDP noted.
The campaign will focus on strengthening waste management systems and cutting plastic waste specifically within the tourism sector, in an effort to protect Cambodia’s rivers and ensure the long-term sustainability of its tourism industry.
