Spain and the European Union are closely monitoring the ongoing border dispute between Cambodia and Thailand, expressing firm support for a peaceful resolution rooted in international law, the Cambodian National Assembly announced Thursday.
The statement followed an official working visit to the Spanish Parliament on April 27 by a high-level Cambodian legislative delegation. Led by H.E. Suos Yara, Chairman of the Commission on Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the delegation represented National Assembly President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary.
During the visit, the Cambodian officials held high-level talks with Javier Maroto, First Vice President of the Spanish Senate, and Concepción Andreu Rodríguez, Second Vice President. They also convened with the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, represented by Vice Chairman Antonio Gutierrez Limones and spokesperson José Antonio Monago Terraza.
Spanish officials expressed concern over the impact of the Cambodia-Thailand conflict on border-area residents and the potential risk to national and World Heritage sites.
“Spain and the European Union are following the situation closely and support the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to resolving the issue through peaceful means and adherence to international legal frameworks,” the press release stated.
The meeting served to reinforce the diplomatic momentum established during the 46th ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Kuala Lumpur in 2025.
Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two Kingdoms, both sides welcomed initiatives to strengthen legislative cooperation. Key areas of discussion included: Sharing expertise in lawmaking, enforcement, and international cooperation; Enhancing ties in trade, investment, clean energy, agriculture, and tourism; Cambodia reaffirmed its support for Spain’s bid for observer status in AIPA, while Spain pledged to facilitate Cambodia’s cooperation with the European Parliament.
The Spanish Senate also voiced its support for Cambodia’s upcoming leadership of the 2nd International Speakers’ Conference (ISC) in 2026, which will be presided over by Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
The delegation also conveyed the Spanish Parliament’s well-wishes for the health and recovery of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni. The visit concluded with a mutual commitment to elevating bilateral friendship and fostering regional stability through inter-parliamentary solidarity.
