The Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further strengthen cooperation in the education sector, contributing to the implementation of the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase 1 and the Cambodia Education Strategic Plan 2024-2028.
The MoU was signed in Phnom Penh on Aug. 27 by H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Youth and Sport of Cambodia, and H.E. Baroness Winterton, UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific.
The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Dominic Williams, British Ambassador to Cambodia, senior officials of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, and representatives of relevant institutions and stakeholders.
Under the MoU, Cambodia and the UK will further expand cooperation in three key areas: primary education; higher education and institutional partnerships; and scholarship programmes.
Speaking at the ceremony, H.E. Dominic Williams highlighted the longstanding partnership between the two countries, stressing that education plays an important role in promoting socio-economic development, strengthening trade relations and further enhancing bilateral ties.
He also reaffirmed the UK’s continued support for Cambodian educational institutions, including cooperation with De Montfort University, as well as future scholarship opportunities for Cambodian students.
For her part, H.E. Baroness Winterton reaffirmed the UK’s strong commitment to Cambodia’s long-term stability and development, emphasising the important role of education in supporting the country’s ambition to become an upper-middle-income country by 2030 and a high-income country by 2050.
She noted that education is not only about schools, universities, degrees and skills, but, more importantly, about creating opportunities for individuals and nations.
