Cambodia Lauds Good Cooperation with UN


The Royal Government of Cambodia has spoken highly of the cooperation with the United Nations, and thanked the UN and UN Country Team for their assistance and support for the socio-economic development in Cambodia, as well as in the fight against COVID-19.

The appreciation was made here yesterday in a meeting between H.E. Ouch Borith, Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister and Standing Secretary of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and H.E. Abdulla Shahid, President of the 76th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) and concurrently the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

On the occasion, H.E. Abdulla Shahid stressed that his visit, although short, underscored his appreciation for Cambodia’s commitment to multilateralism and its contribution to maintaining peace and security in the region and the world. He was impressed to see Cambodia’s rapid development progress in all fields and commended Cambodia’s success in combatting the spread of COVID-19, as well as steady economic recovery from the pandemic.

H.E. Ouch Borith expressed his high regard for the dedication and tireless work of H.E. Abdulla Shahid’s in his services as the UNGA President, during the year of many daunting challenges confronting the world. He underscored the importance of the consultations on the UN Secretary-General’s report “Our Common Goal”, in ensuring that United Nations refocuses on the priority to address the most pressing global needs, including accelerating progress towards the sustainable development agenda.

While touching on Cambodia’s Contribution to the UN Peace-Keeping Operations (UNPKOs), H.E. Ouch Borith and H.E. Abdulla Shahid underlined Cambodia’s proud transformation from being a recipient country of the UN Peace Keepers in the 90s to a significant contributing country to the UN Peacekeeping Missions around the world.

H.E. Ouch Borith highlighted that since 2006, Cambodia has dispatched 8,302 troops, including 580 women, to join 11 UN Peace Keeping Missions in 9 countries. The President of the 76th Session of the UNGA commended Cambodia exemplary contribution to the UNPKOs.

Apart from ASEAN-UN cooperation, H.E. Ouch Borith briefed H.E. Abdulla Shahid on the successful conclusion of the recent 55th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting and Related Meetings. Both sides touched on the possibility and coordination to have the 12th ASEAN-UN Summit, in concurrence with 40th and 41st ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in November 2022 in Cambodia.

H.E. Ouch Borith and H.E. Adbulla Shahid also discussed ways to further enhance Cambodia-Maldives bilateral relations, including through the exchange of top-level visits, consideration of an agreement on visa exemption between the two countries and the establishment of political consolations between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs to explore potential areas for bilateral cooperation.
