NEC and Justice Ministry’s Dismay at Politicised Judgement of Cambodia’s Election

Senior officials at the National Election Committee (NEC) and the Ministry of Justice have expressed their dismay at the politicised judgement of Cambodia’s 7th mandate general election by some individuals.

H.E. Hang Puthea, NEC member and spokesperson, said that the criticism of the election is obviously baseless and politicised and urged the critics to be more reasonable.

In full compliance with the Constitution of Cambodia, the general election was peaceful, 18 political parties joined the race, and over 84 percent cast their votes, he explained.

About 100,000 national and international observers monitoring the election, as well as the participating parties, confirmed that it went smoothly and in a free and fair manner.

H.E. Chin Malin, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice, viewed the misjudgement of the election, especially by some foreigners, as more politically motivated because some politicians they supported were found guilty and banned from the election.

It is sad that those foreigners who proclaimed themselves as democracy lovers do not recognise the voices made by millions of people through their votes.

About 8.2 million legitimate voters cast their votes during Cambodia’s general election on July 23 with informal preliminary results showing that the ruling Cambodian People’s Party achieved a landslide victory.
