Cambodia Reiterates Commitment to Combat Human Trafficking

Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has re-emphasised Cambodia’s firm commitment to fight against any forms and means of human trafficking.

“The Royal Government of Cambodia is highly committed and makes every effort, including through all forces, competent authorities, and relevant parties, to combat human trafficking and modern slavery, which have a cross-border nature and are a challenge for both the region and the world,” he said at the Commemoration of the 18th National Day Against Human Trafficking, held here at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre this morning under the theme “Cambodia is Absolutely Against All Forms and Means of Human Trafficking in the Digital Era.”

Human trafficking affects not only the victims, but also the reputation of Cambodia, the Premier stressed, calling for joint efforts to protect the image and honour of Cambodia, as well as protect the Cambodian citizens and other nationals in Cambodia.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet added that human trafficking is not just a recent issue, it has been around long time ago, and its forms are unclear and complex. Therefore, addressing human trafficking requires highly effective prevention measures as the perpetrators, mostly are illegal foreign immigrants, have brought about unusual and modern criminal techniques that Cambodia has never experienced before, taking advantage of the recovery phase after the COVID-19 crisis.

Such actions have undermined the well-being and safety of Cambodian citizens and foreign nationals living and working in Cambodia, and have had a serious negative impact on the development process, human dignity, and the honour of Cambodia, he said.

“The Royal Government is strongly committed to opposing any attempt to sabotage Cambodia in any form,” underlined the Prime Minister. “Strengthening legal measures and turning the use of technology into an opportunity to suppress human trafficking are an important task, because human trafficking not only affects the victims, but also damages Cambodia’s reputation.”

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet thanked the relevant ministries and institutions and their partners for taking timely action and cooperation in assisting the victims and fighting against human trafficking.
