Minister, WorldFish Discuss Fisheries Resources and Biodiversity Conservation

The Minister of Environment and a delegation of WorldFish, an international organisation working to transform aquatic food systems, have discussed cooperation to protect and conserve Cambodia’s fisheries resources and biodiversity.

H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth met with the WorldFish delegation led by Dr. Michelle Tigchelaar, Head of the WorldFish Climate Change Impact and Sustainability Programme in Malaysia, on Mar. 18 at the ministry.

Dr. Michelle Tigchelaar appreciated the Ministry of Environment through a cooperation on a new scientific programme of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), which is a leading international agricultural research organisation.

The cooperation will contribute to addressing global challenges related to food security, poverty, and the environment, for biodiversity and adaptation to climate change, as well as a joint commitment to achieve sustainable development and protection of natural resources in Cambodia.

H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth highlighted that ensuring food security by raising awareness among local communities to protect and conserve biodiversity is an effective and sustainable approach, which is a priority of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

From there, the government has set out green recreation goals, including replanting mangrove forests to protect habitats and increase the number of birds and aquatic animals with strong community engagement, he added.
