Cambodia’s Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology (MOWRAM) and Thailand’s Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) have agreed to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on transboundary water resources management between the two countries.
The information was shared following a meeting between Cambodian Minister of MOWRAM H.E. Thor Chetha and Thai Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prasert Jantararuangtong in Bangkok on May 14.
According to the ministry, the meeting between MOWRAM and ONWR aimed to strengthen cooperation on transboundary water governance through knowledge sharing, technical collaboration, and policy coordination for sustainable and equitable water use.
The bilateral discussion covered key topics such as the cooperation framework, Cambodia’s master water resource management plan, integrated water management, relevant policies and regulations, transboundary water management in the 9C-9T sub-basin, dam data sharing, coordination, and technical exchange.
Since 2018, Cambodia and Thailand have jointly implemented the 9C-9T project to address flood and drought management in the sub-basin.
Funded by Germany’s BMZ and implemented by GIZ with support from the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the project is led by national inter-agency working groups under Cambodia’s MOWRAM and Thailand’s ONWR.
