Senate President Hopes for Further Promotion of Cambodia-Singapore Relations

Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has expressed hope for the continued strengthening of Cambodia-Singapore relations, according to Senate Spokesperson H.E. Chea Thyrith.

This message was conveyed during a meeting between Samdech Techo Hun Sen and the visiting Prime Minister of Singapore, H.E. Lawrence Wong, and his delegation at the Senate Palace this morning.

During the meeting, Samdech Techo warmly welcomed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and his delegation, noting that the visit marked an important step in enhancing the bilateral ties between the two countries.

“Samdech Techo considers H.E. Lawrence Wong’s visit to Cambodia as a significant contribution to promoting stronger and more prosperous relations between Cambodia and Singapore,” said the spokesperson.

The Senate President highlighted that Cambodia-Singapore relations have enjoyed a long-standing and fruitful history, beginning over 60 years ago during the reign of His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk and Singapore’s founding Prime Minister, H.E. Lee Kuan Yew. He noted that the bilateral relationship has continued to flourish over the decades.

On the occasion, Samdech Techo encouraged both nations to further expand cooperation in the areas of trade, economy, and tourism. He also expressed his wish to see more direct flights from Singapore to Cambodia, particularly in light of Cambodia’s upcoming launch of its new international airport.

Additionally, Samdech Techo briefed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on the Cambodia-Thailand border situation, starting from the clash on May 28, which led to the unilateral closure of the border by Thailand and other subsequent threats.

He emphasised that Cambodia does not seek war with its neighbour and wishes to resolve the issue peacefully, in accordance with international law. However, if violations and invasions persist, Cambodia reserves the right to defend its sovereignty.

For his part, H.E. Lawrence Wong expressed his gratitude to Samdech Techo Hun Sen for the warm hospitality and reaffirmed that Cambodia-Singapore relations have been steadily developing. He also thanked the Senate President for the explanation on the border situation and expressed hope that the dispute will be resolved peacefully and in line with international law.
