Cambodia and South Korea have committed to intensifying law enforcement cooperation, focusing on specialised training and technical exchanges to combat the rising threat of transnational organised crime and online scams.
During a meeting at the Ministry of Interior in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H.E. Abhisantibindit Sar Sokha met with the newly appointed South Korean Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. KIM Chang Yong, to outline a strategic roadmap for security collaboration.
The two officials emphasised the urgent need to enhance the technical capabilities of police forces. Key areas of focus for the upcoming year include: Strengthening crime scene investigation and evidence gathering; sharing modern methodologies for tracking criminal networks; organising study visits for high-ranking officials and specialised units to share regional security best practices.
Ambassador Kim reaffirmed Seoul’s commitment to supporting the Royal Cambodian Police through comprehensive training programmes. He confirmed that South Korea is prepared to host Cambodian delegations to provide hands-on experience in advanced security operations and modern policing techniques.
Deputy Prime Minister Sar Sokha lauded the existing partnership, noting that bilateral ties reached a milestone with the establishment of the Cambodia-Korea Joint Task Force.
“This collaboration has yielded significant results in preventing and suppressing cross-border crimes,” the Deputy PM stated, specifically highlighting successes in dismantling sophisticated technology-based fraudulent schemes and cybercrime rings.
The discussions underscored a mutual interest in maintaining public order and social safety, not only within their respective borders but across the ASEAN region.
Ambassador Kim expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s ongoing coordination, noting that the “Joint Working Group for Korean Citizens” has exceeded expectations in ensuring the safety and legal protection of the Korean community in Cambodia.
Both parties concluded the meeting by pledging to expedite pending projects and operational plans initiated by their respective law enforcement agencies to ensure a robust response to evolving security threats.
