Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister Seeks French Support on Cambodia-Thailand Boundary Documentation

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has written to French President H.E. Emmanuel Macron to express appreciation for France’s support for the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand and to request French assistance regarding historical and technical documents related to the two countries’ international boundary.

According to a press release issued this morning by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the letter was sent on Feb. 4 in response to France’s indication of its readiness to provide relevant documentation should Cambodia formally request it.

In his letter, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet thanked France for its principled and constructive engagement in efforts to facilitate the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law. He also highlighted France’s long-standing contributions to Cambodia’s peace, development, and national reconstruction, noting that these efforts have strengthened Cambodia’s national capacities and deepened the close partnership between the two countries.

The Prime Minister underscored the importance Cambodia attaches to France’s role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, as well as its leadership in promoting international peace, global governance, international law, and multilateralism. He further emphasised the shared history, mutual respect, and common values that bind Cambodia and France.

In this context, Samdech Thipadei requested France to consider providing expertise and advisory support, and to facilitate access to or the provision of historical and technical documents related to the Cambodia-Thailand international boundary, which dates back to the Protectorate era.

Reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful dispute settlement, the Premier stressed that Cambodia stands ready to work closely with France and the international community to safeguard peace through respect for international law and dialogue, rather than through the threat or use of force. He expressed confidence that France’s continued engagement would contribute to achieving a just and lasting solution, allowing the Cambodian and Thai peoples to live side by side in peace, security, good neighbourliness, and prosperity.

The Royal Government of Cambodia reiterated its strong commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes, the renunciation of the use of force, and the promotion of international law and multilateralism as foundations for regional and global peace and stability.
