Cabinet Ministers Approve Draft Law on Food Safety


The Cambodian cabinet ministers approved the draft law on food safety, during the plenary session held here at the Peace Palace this morning under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

H.E. Phay Siphan, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister and Chairman of Royal Government Spokesperson Unit (RGSU), said this draft law is designed in accordance with the requirements of the global trend of international trade and in accordance with the Royal Government’s agenda 2012-2015 related to the trade sector, as Cambodia has an obligation to establish a strong legal system in response to the international primacy of integration of Cambodian economy into the region and the world.

It sets out the basic principles to promote food safety and compliance with the set standards to ensure the consumer protection, he added.

Besides, he pointed out, the cabinet meeting endorsed the draft law on the amendment to article 140 of the Law on the Administrative Management of Capital, Provinces, Municipalities, Districts and Khans which increase the number of members of the capital, provincial, municipal, district and Khan administrations.

With the amendment, the Phnom Penh capital administration will have at most 11 members, while the provincial administrations from 7 to 11, and the municipal, district and Khan administrations from 5 to 7, H.E. Phay Siphan underlined.

This law is intended to define the administration of the Capitals, Provinces, Municipalities, Districts and Khans. The Capitals, Provinces, Municipalities, Districts and Khans shall be governed by the principles of unified administration to establish, promote and sustain democratic development through decentralisation and deconcentration policies.
