Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen delivered a keynote address to the plenary session of Timor-Leste’s National Parliament on May 8, during his three-day official visit.
The event was attended by representatives from Timor-Leste’s five political parties.
In his address, Samdech Techo Hun Sen focused on three key areas: the bilateral relationship between Cambodia and Timor-Leste since its establishment in July 2002, Cambodia’s experience in joining ASEAN, and the four primary goals of Cambodia’s ASEAN membership.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who led Cambodia’s ASEAN accession in 1999, emphasised that key benefits included ASEAN’s policy of non-interference in member states’ internal affairs, its consensus-based decision-making process, its promotion of economic development, and its role as a platform for expanding Cambodia’s diplomatic reach.
He also highlighted ASEAN’s continued relevance on the global stage, asserting its strength amidst the weakening influence of other international organisations.
Following his address, parliamentarians and political party representatives warmly welcomed Samdech Techo Hun Sen and his delegation. They expressed gratitude for Cambodia’s support, particularly in Timor-Leste’s pursuit of ASEAN observer status and future full membership.
The representatives described Hun Sen’s visit as historic and voiced their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
