The Secretariat Meeting of the Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) entered its second day today in Malaysia, focusing on measures to enhance the effectiveness and credibility of the ceasefire implementation, as well as to strengthen mutual trust and confidence between the two countries.
The meeting, which will continue until Aug. 6, is being held in preparation for the Extraordinary Session of the GBC, scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur on Aug. 7.
Despite ongoing discussions aimed at reinforcing the ceasefire, tensions escalated yesterday at approximately 11:00 a.m., when Thai armed forces, accompanied by heavy machinery including excavators, entered the Anseh area—located within Cambodian sovereign territory—and laid barbed wire, in defiance of strong objections from Cambodian forces.
“This act by Thailand obviously constitutes a flagrant violation of the ceasefire agreement and poses a grave threat to peace and security along the border between the two countries, as well as the wider region as a whole,” underlined H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, at a press briefing here this morning.
Despite Thailand’s hostile actions, Cambodia has exercised maximum restraint, reaffirming its strong commitment to fully implement the ceasefire agreement brokered through the leadership of H.E. Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, and H.E. Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia, with active participation from the People’s Republic of China. The agreement was widely welcomed by the international community.
“As a responsible and peace-loving nation, Cambodia has strictly and faithfully adhered to the ceasefire terms, prioritising dialogue and cooperation over confrontation and conflict,” the spokesperson emphasised. “Cambodia’s unwavering compliance with the agreement demonstrates our deep respect for the tireless efforts of our international partners and our genuine commitment to lasting peace and stability in the region.”
