Cambodia and the United Kingdom have discussed ways to further promote gender equality and women empowerment.
The discussion was held between H.E. Mrs. Lork Kheng, Chairwoman of the National Assembly (NA)’s 8th Commission, and H.E. Dominic Williams, British Ambassador to Cambodia., at the NA Palace on Aug. 7.
H.E. Dominic Williams mentioned that the purpose of meeting was to seek for other means to combat violence against women and gender issues for women empowerment and give priority to local women to be educated in both knowledge and health, and decision making at all levels.
Accordingly, the UK has collaborated with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Ministry of Education, Youths and Sports to grant scholarships to Cambodian women to pursue their education at higher universities in the UK, the ambassador said.
For her part, H.E. Mrs. Lork Kheng reaffirmed the Parliament’s and the Royal Government’s high attention to promoting gender equality and women and girl empowerment in all priority sectors.
She also recalled that gender equality has been strengthened at ministries/institutions through Neary Rattanak VI Strategic Plan (2024-2028) to increase women’s participation in job markets, enhance entrepreneurship and boost financial access.
She further called on development partners, particularly the UK to help promote gender equity through increased awareness in women’s health and digital transformation and so on.
On the occasion, Mr. Bikash Dawahoo, UK’s Regional Gender and Equality Coordinator for Southeast Asia, Republic of Korea and Japan, was introduced by H.E. Dominic Williams, for an exchange of views on Cambodia’s ongoing efforts in gender equality promotion.
