The outcomes of the Extraordinary Cambodia–Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting, held on Aug. 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, have received overwhelmingly positive global reactions, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC).
Speaking at a press briefing in Phnom Penh at 11:00 a.m. today, H.E. Chum Sounry, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the MFAIC, said that regional states and ASEAN institutions have praised the agreement and observer mechanisms as important steps toward peaceful de-escalation.
He added that international media and diplomats showed optimism and strong interest in the developments, with media coverage emphasised the significance of this agreement in defusing the conflict.
In a press statement, U.S. Secretary of State H.E. Marco Rubio said the U.S. welcomes the General Border Committee meeting yesterday in Kuala Lumpur as an important step forward in solidifying the ceasefire arrangement and establishing the ASEAN observation mechanism.
“President Trump and I expect the governments of Cambodia and Thailand to fully honor their commitments to end this conflict,” he added.
H.E. Marco Rubio also expressed his gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister H.E. Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and for hosting the ceasefire process, a direct result of his willingness to co-organise with the U.S. the July 28 Special Meeting to address the conflict.
“We look forward to supporting Malaysia, ASEAN, and both countries as this process moves forward,” he emphasised.
China also welcomed the outcomes of yesterday’s Extraordinary GBC Meeting. Noting that the situation along the Cambodia-Thailand border continues to deescalate, the spokesperson of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this fully proves that dialogue and consultation is the right way to resolve disputes.
“China upholds a just and fair position, supports Cambodia and Thailand in enhancing communication and resolving differences properly, supports advancing political settlement through the ASEAN Way, and is ready to continue playing a constructive role for the peaceful settlement of the border disputes between Cambodia and Thailand,” the spokesperson added.
For her part, H.E. Ms. Catherine West MP, UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, wrote, “I welcome the agreement between Thailand and Cambodia of a framework to ensure a full and effective ceasefire. We encourage both sides to uphold this agreement, which sets out key terms for sustainable peace including ensuring the protection of civilians.”
H.E. Frank Hartmann, Director General for the Indo-Pacific at the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, welcomed the GBC meeting outcome between Cambodia and Thailand, highlighting the ceasefire implementation and ASEAN observer team as key steps towards lasting peace.
