Cambodia Reiterates Stance Against Fake News to Promote Peaceful Dialogue

Cambodia has reaffirmed its commitment to combating the creation and dissemination of false information and fake news in order to ensure a conducive environment for peaceful dialogue.

This was among the 13 points agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand at the Extraordinary Meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) held on Aug. 7, 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

According to H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, both sides agreed to refrain from spreading false information and fake news so as to de-escalate tensions, mitigate negative public sentiment, and foster conditions for constructive dialogue.

“Cambodia absolutely does not support the production or sharing of false information or fake news. Such actions not only fail to ease tensions and reduce negative impacts on public sentiment, but also hinder the creation of an environment conducive to further peaceful dialogue,” she stressed.

On the issue of misinformation, the Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, H.E. Pen Bona, has repeatedly reminded the public to rely solely on accurate information disseminated through official channels — including statements from Cambodia’s top leaders, the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, and authorised, verified sources from relevant ministries and institutions.
