Cross-Border QR Payments to Enhance Travel Experience for Indian Tourists in Cambodia

Cambodia and India have officially launched the first phase of a cross-border payment system, allowing Indian tourists to make seamless, real-time digital transactions across Cambodia using familiar mobile payment applications from India.

H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, delivered congratulatory remarks at the official launch ceremony of the Cambodia-India cross-border UPI/QR payment system, organised by the Embassy of India in Cambodia in Phnom Penh on June 2.

The event was attended by H.E. Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of India to the Kingdom of Cambodia, along with senior leaders and officials from ministries and government institutions, executives from the banking and private sectors, and other distinguished guests.

On the occasion, H.E. Huot Hak emphasised that the cross-border digital payment linkage represents not only technological progress but also a bridge connecting people, businesses, and tourists of both countries, enabling more convenient, secure, and efficient financial transactions.

The Minister expressed strong support for the implementation of the Cambodia-India cross-border UPI/QR payment system, noting that it would facilitate travel, support tourism businesses, promote a connected and inclusive digital economy, and further strengthen friendship and cooperation between the governments and peoples of the two nations.

He added that the system is expected to enhance the travel experience of Indian tourists while creating new opportunities to expand tourism cooperation through increased visitor arrivals, improved air connectivity, the promotion of religious and wellness tourism, and stronger collaboration between the tourism sectors of Cambodia and India.

According to H.E. Huot Hak, Cambodia received approximately 22,000 Indian visitors in the first quarter of 2026, with arrivals expected to continue growing through improved connectivity, travel facilitation measures, and innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing convenience and visitor experience, particularly in connection with International Yoga Day celebrations and related events to be held in Cambodia.
