Cambodia, China Reach Deals to Export Meat and Dried Fruits

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) of the Kingdom of Cambodia and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC) have reached two important deals to boost Cambodian agricultural exports to the Chinese market.

According to the MAFF, both sides signed here on June 3 a protocol on sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) requirements on exporting beef products and dried longans from Cambodia to the Chinese market, and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in plant and livestock quarantine.

The signing ceremony was presided over by H.E. Dith Tina, Minister of MAFF, and H.E. Mrs. Sun Meijun, Minister of GACC, at the MAFF in Phnom Penh.

H.E. Dith Tina praised and highly valued the Cambodia-China agri-trade cooperation, which continues to yield fruitful results.

Both sides have been cooperating to accelerate various necessary procedures, particularly registration with GACC and the formulation of sanitary and phytosanitary protocols, to pave a smoother path for Cambodian agricultural products into the Chinese market.

The sanitary and phytosanitary requirements protocol, abbreviated as SPS, is a crucial, mutually agreed-upon market-opening mechanism for both parties.

The SPS protocol defines the conditions for care, harvesting, cleaning, processing, packaging, and transportation to ensure that all exported agricultural products do not contain pathogens, chemicals, pests, or infectious diseases that could harm human, animal, and plant health.

The signing of these protocols and the MoU highlights the fruitful outcomes based on a shared position to strengthen and expand cooperation, aiming to increase the volume of Cambodia-China agri-trade.

Both parties will promote the export of potential agricultural products from Cambodia to the Chinese market while ensuring quality and sanitary standards to bring mutual benefits to both nations.
