Former UNTAC Force Commander Praises Cambodia’s Rapid Development


Visiting Former Force Commander of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) H.E. Lieutenant General John Sanderson has lauded Cambodia for its fast development, stressing that the Kingdom had remarkable changes.

While paying a courtesy call on Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen here at the Peace Palace this morning, the former UNTAC force commander expressed his surprise over the development of Cambodia, particularly Phnom Penh, compared to 30 years ago, according to H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Assistant to the Cambodian Prime Minister.

H.E. Lieutenant General John Sanderson also spoke highly of the contribution of Cambodia to regional and global affairs, including Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship this year.

For his part, Samdech Techo Hun Sen thanked H.E. Lieutenant General John Sanderson and Australia for their contribution to the peace seeking process in Cambodia, recalling that Australia is one of the first nations that dismissed the Khmer Rouge at the UN.

The Premier briefed his guest on the vision and strategies leading to the full peace in Cambodia as well as those to manage the COVID-19 spread. He took the opportunity to thank the Government and people of Australia for their support for Cambodia in combating the pandemic.

H.E. Lieutenant General John Sanderson and his wife Mrs. Lorraine Sanderson have been on a visit in Cambodia from April 23 to May 2, 2022 to mark the 30th anniversary of UNTAC, and as part of the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Cambodia.
