The Cambodian Red Cross (CRC) delivered emergency relief supplies Wednesday to 1,412 households affected by heavy flash floods and strong winds in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey province, to help ease their immediate living hardships.
The distribution ceremony was presided over by H.E. You Lana, Second Deputy Secretary-General of the CRC, representing Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen, President of the CRC. He was accompanied by H.E. Oum Reatrey, Head of the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Red Cross Branch.
Speaking at the event, H.E. You Lana conveyed warm greetings and deep condolences from Samdech Kittiprittpundit Bun Rany Hun Sen to the affected residents, emphasising that the CRC leadership remains deeply committed to the well-being and livelihoods of disaster-stricken communities.
“The aid distributed today is meant not only to relieve immediate financial and material burdens but also to demonstrate the CRC’s ongoing humanitarian commitment to vulnerable citizens,” he said.
H.E. You Lana advised residents to stay alert to evolving weather conditions and follow guidance from local authorities to protect their lives and property. He also expressed gratitude to provincial and city officials, local armed forces, and branch volunteers for their prompt response in evacuating residents to safe ground and coordinating disaster relief efforts.
According to a report from the Banteay Meanchey Provincial Committee for Disaster Management, floodwaters forced the temporary evacuation of 2,434 families across the region.
The agricultural sector suffered extensive damage, with 18,026 hectares of rice fields impacted – 430 hectares of which were completely destroyed – alongside 98 hectares of cassava and three hectares of mixed crops.
In addition, floodwaters damaged 345 road sections totaling 187.68 kilometres, severely disrupting local transportation, supply chains, and daily commutes.
Local authorities and emergency management agencies are continuing rescue and recovery operations across affected regions to help communities restore normal operations.
