Cambodia Observes World Day for Safety and Health at Work


Minister of Labour and Vocational Training H.E. Ith Samheng on July 5 chaired Cambodia’s 17th celebration of the World Day for Safety and Health at Work with a call for better attention to workers’ welfare.

This year’s event themed “Working Together to Build a Positive Culture of Safety and Health” took place at Siem Reap province.

The minister expected that the celebration will further raise awareness and cooperation on occupational safety and health among concerned government institutions, national and international development agencies and partners, labour unions and associations as well as the workers themselves to better working environment.

It was also aimed to disseminate occupational risks and good lessons learned, and advocate for policy and financial support to prevent and reduce loss of life, work accidents and disease detection like COVID-19, he said.

The ministry organised the World Day for Safety and Health in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

Some 700 officials and representatives from government agencies, factories, tourism sector including hotels, construction and beyond attended the celebration.

According to the study by the National Social Security Fund, a total of 11,258 workers (6,220 female) experienced occupational accidents in 2021, indicating nearly 26 percent decrease compared to 2020.

Of the workers, 5,725 (2,982 female) had accident at work and 5,533 (3,238 female) had accidents while traveling to work.
