Cambodia Committed to Ensuring National Energy Security and Independence

Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet this morning reaffirmed that the Royal Government is committed to ensuring the national energy security and independence.

Addressing the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Stung Tatay Leu Hydropower Dam of 150 megawatts in Thmar Baing district, Koh Kong province, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said the national energy security and independence are a main goal of the Royal Government of Cambodia.

“We have so far set a goal to promote the electricity sector, not only for the people who need to charge their phones, but also to allow their children to study at night, do business more easily instead of using electric generators and buying electricity from the private sector,” he said.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet mentioned that now, there are very few people who do not use electricity.  Even cars now need to be charged …, therefore we need to continue to have energy security and independence to ensure the sustainable development of our nation.

“We cannot rely on others, energy security is very important for us. If we do not have our own means, we will be in danger, therefore we have to put all efforts to ensure this, especially to develop the sector, not just to build hydropower dams,” he stressed.

According to the Premier, about 62 percent of energy come from renewable energy sources, especially from the seven hydropower plants and solar stations throughout the country.

By 2030, Cambodia is trying to generate around 70 percent of electricity from renewable energy sources as the clean and green energy, said Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet.
