The World Bank has committed US$2 million for a climate change adaptation project in Cambodia aimed at improving the livelihoods of communities in protected areas in response to the severe impacts of climate change.
Ms. Tania Meyer, World Bank Country Manager for Cambodia, announced the financial assistance, during a courtesy call on H.E. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, in Phnom Penh on Dec. 5.
Ms. Tania Meyer commended the efforts of the Ministry of Environment in introducing the Chakra Environmental Strategy that encourages active participation by students and youth in cleanliness and greenery.
She also expressed support for the development of green recreational destinations and ecotourism corridors for communities in protected areas to improve their livelihoods.
For his part, H.E. Eang Sophalleth thanked the World Bank for its support to the ministry’s strategy to manage plastic waste and encouraged the bank to expand its support for sustainable development, especially regarding solid waste management, plastic pollution reduction, and landfill infrastructure construction in response to greenhouse gas emissions.
