Cambodia’s Sport Reborn and Gets Healthy after Victory over Khmer Rouge

Cambodia’s sports sector has progressed remarkably within the country and at the international arenas since the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime on Jan. 7, 1979.

The assessment was highlighted by Ms. Prak Samphors, a long-standing TV sports presenter, adding that Cambodia’s historic role as the host of the SEA Games in 2023 brought its sport reputation to a new height.

From almost nothing before the victory over the dark period, Cambodia’s sports are growing under the shade of peace pioneered by the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) led by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

Although Cambodia’s sports were the latest to be reborn in Southeast Asia, it has the potential to match that of fellow countries in the region.

During the Khmer Rouge, almost all athletes and coaches were killed, and Cambodia’s remaining sports human resources were very few and in poor health after the fall of the regime.
