The Government of Japan has agreed to provide US$446,801 under the framework, the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects, KUSANONE, to support irrigation facility rehabilitation and two bridge construction projects in Takeo, Kampong Thom and Siem Reap provinces.
H.E. UENO Atsushi, Ambassador of Japan to Cambodia, signed here at the embassy on Jan. 30 the grant contracts with representatives of three recipient organisations.
The three projects include the “Project for the Rehabilitation of Trapeang Krek Irrigation Facilities in Takeo Province” to be implemented by Takeo Provincial Department of Water Resources and Meteorology; and the “Project for the Construction of Bridge in Chhouk Commune, Prasat Sambour District, Kampong Thom Province,” to be carried out by Kampong Thom Provincial Department of Public Works and Transport; while the “Project for the Construction of Bridge in Khav Commune, Chi Kraeng District, Siem Reap Province” will be conducted by Khav commune administration.
H.E. Ambassador UENO expressed his expectation that these grants will improve the quality of life for people in each project area, and further promote friendship between Japan and Cambodia.
According to a press release of the Japanese Embassy, Japan’s “KUSANONE” Projects started in Cambodia in 1991 in order to support Cambodia’s reconstruction and development at the grassroots level. The assistance aims to protect those who are vulnerable due to various factors such as poverty and/or misfortunes that directly threaten their lives, livelihood, and dignity, as well as to promote self-reliance of local communities. Since 1991, the Government of Japan has provided over US$70 million for mainly local authorities and non-governmental organizations to implement 694 KUSANONE projects throughout Cambodia.
