Kampot province has officially been declared open defecation free (ODF), bringing the number of ODF provinces in Cambodia to 21.
Minister of Rural Development H.E. Chhay Rithisen presided over an official ceremony marking the achievement in the provincial city this morning. Provincial leaders, civil servants, authorities, teachers, students and the general public as well as representatives of development partners also joined the celebration.
According to H.E. Dr. Mao Thonin, Governor of Kampot province, all residents in the 491 villages of 93 communes-Sangkat of Kampot province’s 9 city and districts are now using toilets. About 94.37 percent of them are using private toilets, while the rest are using shared latrines.
In his address, H.E. Chhay Rithisen commended Kampot province for its significant progress in improving access to sanitation and clean water, describing it as a key step toward public health and development.
Other capital and provinces that have achieved ODF status are Phnom Penh, Svay Rieng, Prey Veng, Kandal, Kampong Speu, Kampong Chhnang, Kep, Preah Sihanouk, Kampong Cham, Rattanakiri, Siem Reap, Thbong Khmum, Takeo, Stung Treng, Kampong Thom, Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, and Kratie.
Nationwide, Cambodia has achieved 87.4 percent coverage in access to clean water and 92.4 percent access to basic sanitation. The government aims to ensure sufficient access to safe drinking water and achieve 100 percent national coverage for sanitation by 2030.
