Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen announced this morning that the process to amend the Constitution regarding the revocation of Khmer citizenship will begin next week.
Speaking during a gathering with students and teachers at the Kamchay Mear Education and Training Centre in Prey Veng province, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said that the National Assembly is scheduled to hold a session to deliberate on the amendment on July 11, 2025.
He explained that the amendment aims to authorise the revocation of Khmer citizenship. This step follows a joint request from the 125 members of the National Assembly and the Royal Government to His Majesty the King. The Constitutional Council confirmed yesterday that such a request is “possible,” he added.
At the same time, the Senate President emphasised that one key element of the Constitution that must remain unchanged is Cambodia’s status as a constitutional monarchy.
He also noted that there are currently some Cambodians, including politicians, who hold dual nationality.
