Cambodia has expressed confidence that the upcoming extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting will be constructive and yield fruitful results.
The optimism was conveyed by H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, during a press briefing this morning.
She confirmed that the extraordinary GBC meeting will take place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, at Thailand’s request. At the same time, she added, Cambodia also proposed that Malaysia, the United States of America, and the People’s Republic of China, to attend the meeting as observers as they have been playing a central role in facilitating the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand on July 28, 2025.
According to a letter of H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Cambodia, to his Thai counterpart, the extraordinary GBC meeting will be convened from Aug. 4 to 7, 2025 in Malaysia, a venue considered neutral by the Thai side.
The GBC meeting is one of three major outcomes agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand during their special meeting held in Malaysia on July 28, 2025, aimed at resolving the recent border clashes.
H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata also renewed Cambodia’s call for the prompt establishment of an observation mechanism to be coordinated by Malaysia in its capacity as the Chair of ASEAN.
“With the active participation of other ASEAN member states and key international partners, this mechanism will play a vital role in supporting both Cambodia and Thailand in monitoring, reporting on, and ensuring the sustained and successful implementation of the ceasefire,” emphasised the spokesperson.
