Senior officials from key government ministries convened yesterday to prioritise the integration of digital and artificial intelligence (AI) skills across Cambodia’s school system, a critical step towards realising the nation’s digital economy and e-government ambitions.
The meeting, held on the afternoon of Oct. 9, at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports (MoEYS) headquarters, saw high-level participation focused on charting a course for digital transformation in education.
H.E. Chea Vandeth, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, underscored the necessity of embedding digital skills into the curriculum, calling it a “crucial step” toward establishing a robust digital government and advancing the country’s digital economy.
H.E. Minister affirmed the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications (MPTC)’s commitment to supporting this vision through several key measures: Strengthening Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure in schools; Providing technical assistance to develop high-quality digital training programmes; Cooperatively establishing AI research centres within the education system.
In response, H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MoEYS, expressed profound appreciation for MPTC’s continuous support. He highlighted MoEYS’s ongoing efforts to reform the national curriculum, focusing on: Strengthening teachers’ capacity in new technologies; Creating innovative digital learning and teaching resources.
The Deputy Prime Minister voiced strong support for the proposed AI research centres, stressing that the initiative would play a “vital role in enhancing the quality and effectiveness of teaching and learning in Cambodia, in line with global trends.”
H.E. Dr. Hang Chuon Naron further emphasised that establishing an AI research centre marks an “important milestone” in promoting the use of AI technology in education. With joint support from both ministries, the centre is expected to transform teaching and learning methods through AI tools, while adhering to key principles including responsibility, ethics, equity, and respect for Cambodia’s social, cultural, and historical context.
The collaboration signals a concerted Royal Government effort to prepare Cambodia’s youth for the digital future by modernising educational infrastructure and content.
