CHRC Condemns Thai Military Attacks as “Grave Threat to Peace and Severe Human Rights Violations”

The Cambodian Human Rights Committee (CHRC) has expressed deep concern and strongly condemned what it described as brutal, unlawful and inhumane attacks by the Thai military against Cambodia’s territorial integrity and civilians along the Cambodia-Thailand border on Dec. 7–8.

According to major international media outlets, including CNN, BBC, Al Jazeera, Reuters and The Guardian, Thai forces launched multiple assaults on Cambodian troops and nearby civilian areas. The strikes – reportedly involving heavy weapons, F-16 fighter jets and chemical agents – resulted in numerous Cambodian civilian deaths and injuries.

The CHRC said the attacks constitute serious violations of the UN Charter, ASEAN Charter, international human rights and humanitarian law, as well as bilateral ceasefire agreements and the recently signed Cambodia-Thailand Joint Declaration on Peace Deal in Kuala Lumpur, witnessed by U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The Committee stated that the Thai military’s actions undermine regional peace and contradict ASEAN’s core values of unity and community spirit.

The CHRC urged the international and regional community to condemn Thailand’s actions and apply pressure on this country to halt its aggression immediately and take full responsibility under international law for the damages caused.

The Committee reaffirmed that, regardless of conflict situations, human rights and international humanitarian law must be upheld, and that the territorial integrity and lives of Cambodian citizens must be protected.

It added that Cambodia remains committed to respecting the ceasefire, implementing all peace agreements with Thailand, and pursuing peaceful, lawful solutions to all disputes. Cambodia continues to reject all forms of force or intimidation.

The CHRC said it will continue monitoring, documenting and reporting all human rights violations stemming from the Thai military’s actions and stands in solidarity with the Cambodian civilians affected by the attacks.
