The Japanese government has committed US$307,720 in grant assistance to support critical infrastructure projects in rural Cambodia, aiming to improve access to clean water and enhance primary education.
The grant agreements were signed on Thursday at the Japanese Embassy in Phnom Penh by Ambassador H.E. Ueno Atsushi alongside local provincial representatives. The funding is extended through Japan’s “Kusanone” (Grassroots) Human Security Programme, which provides direct, flexible support to local authorities and non-governmental organisations for community-driven development.
According to an official statement from the embassy, the aid will finance two key initiatives:
In Svay Rieng province, a project to install a clean water supply system serving nine villages in Kandieng Reay commune. The agreement was signed with the Director of the Svay Rieng Provincial Water Supply.
In Stung Treng province, the construction of a new school building at the Samdach Krom Preah Primary School. This agreement was formalised with the Director of the Provincial Department of Education, Youth, and Sports.
“We expect that these grants will contribute to improving the quality of life for people living in the project areas and further strengthen the relationship between Japan and Cambodia,” Ambassador Ueno stated during the signing ceremony.
