Cambodia to Develop Koh Sralao as First Model Carbon-Neutral Area

The Ministry of Environment has announced plans to develop Koh Sralao in Koh Kong province into Cambodia’s first model carbon-neutral island.

Located in Koh Sralao village, Koh Kapik commune, Botum Sakor district, the island – home to more than 300 households – will serve as a pilot site for sustainable and environmentally friendly development.

The initiative was announced by Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth during a visit to Koh Sralao on Mar. 26, where he met with local authorities and residents and presided over the “Peace Mangrove Festival.”

According to the Minister, the project will focus on three key strategies: infrastructure development, stakeholder engagement, and active participation by local communities, with the aim of promoting environmental conservation and advancing green, sustainable development in Cambodia’s coastal areas.

To transform Koh Sralao into a carbon-neutral island, the Ministry plans to implement a range of measures, including mangrove restoration and reforestation, development of climate-resilient infrastructure, promotion of green technologies, and the use of renewable energy such as solar power.

Additional efforts will include proper solid waste management through waste separation and environmentally sound disposal practices, development of eco-friendly tourism infrastructure and products, and the promotion of smart agriculture.
