Timor-Leste Prime Minister H.E. Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão has reaffirmed his country’s strong commitment to becoming a full member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
During a meeting with Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia, this morning, Prime Minister Gusmão emphasised the importance of ASEAN membership for Timor-Leste amid ongoing global uncertainties.
“In the current unpredictable global climate, ASEAN membership is vital for Timor-Leste,” said Prime Minister Gusmão, according to Senate Spokesperson H.E. Chea Thirith. He expressed hope that his country would gain full membership in the near future.
The Prime Minister thanked Cambodia for its continued support for Timor-Leste’s accession and expressed hope for further backing from the Kingdom moving forward.
In response, Samdech Techo Hun Sen expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended during his recent visit to Timor-Leste. He acknowledged that while economic and trade ties between the two nations remain limited, their strong political relationship reflects the deep and enduring friendship between the two countries.
Samdech Techo also noted the complementary strengths of the two nations, highlighting Timor-Leste’s energy security and Cambodia’s food security.
He suggested enhanced bilateral cooperation to leverage these respective advantages.
He proposed that Timor-Leste consider Cambodia as a future hub for food supply and expressed optimism that both governments would explore opportunities for deeper collaboration at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.
Additionally, Samdech Techo highlighted prospects for expanding cooperation in education and tourism. He announced that he had requested the Royal Government of Cambodia to increase the number of scholarships available to Timorese students.
Prime Minister Gusmão welcomed the initiative and agreed to hold further discussions with Cambodia on these proposals.
