Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, H.E. Wang Wenbin, has reiterated China’s firm commitment to Cambodia’s sovereignty and legitimate rights.
During a meeting with Phnom Penh Municipal Governor H.E. Khuong Sreng at the Capital Hall this morning, Ambassador Wang pledged that China will significantly increase its promotional efforts to attract a growing number of Chinese tourists to Cambodia.
Governor Khuong Sreng provided an overview of Phnom Penh’s historical progress and current development, emphasising the city’s comprehensive growth across various sectors, facilitated by sustained peace and stability.
He highlighted recent achievements under the leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, including the popular pedestrian street (Walk Street), which enjoys strong support from both local and international visitors and maintains high level of security and public order.
H.E. Governor also expressed gratitude for China’s substantial contributions to Phnom Penh’s infrastructure, notably the China-funded Third Ring Road, officially named Xi Jinping Boulevard. This key infrastructure project has played a crucial role in alleviating traffic congestion by diverting vehicles from the city centre.
At the national level, H.E. Khuong Sreng acknowledged China’s broader support, encompassing significant projects such as the Funan Techo Canal. He reaffirmed Cambodia’s unwavering adherence to the One-China Policy and the strong diplomatic ties between the two nations. This close relationship has also fostered sister-city partnerships between Phnom Penh and several Chinese cities, facilitating the exchange of development experiences and best practices.
Regarding safety and security, he assured that Phnom Penh maintains excellent conditions, particularly in ensuring the protection of Chinese citizens and the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia. He reaffirmed the city’s commitment to providing top-tier security during past visits by Chinese President Xi Jinping, underscoring the strength of Cambodia-China relations.
Ambassador Wang underscored that China stands as a loyal and reliable friend to Cambodia, consistently providing support during challenging times, exemplified by the significant vaccine assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic. With 2025 designated as Cambodia’s “Tourism Year,” he conveyed China’s strong commitment to actively promote Cambodia as a premier destination to significantly boost Chinese tourist arrivals.
He further noted that Chinese nationals living and working in Phnom Penh benefit from a safe and stable environment. The ambassador commended the efforts of local authorities and Cambodian citizens in ensuring exceptional security during important diplomatic events and reaffirmed the “ironclad” relationship between the two countries.
Looking ahead, Ambassador Wang expressed China’s keen interest in strengthening cooperation in key sectors such as agriculture and tourism to attract an even greater influx of Chinese visitors. He concluded by reiterating China’s enduring support for Cambodia’s sovereignty and stability and highlighted the significance of this year, which marks the 67th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Cambodia.
