H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence, confirmed that the 20 Cambodian troops currently in Thai custody since July 29, 2025, have been reported safe and unharmed by the Thai Army.
Speaking at a press briefing this morning, H.E. Lt. Gen. Socheata reaffirmed Cambodia’s ongoing engagement in negotiations with the Thai side to secure the soldiers’ release, and renewed Cambodia’s firm call for their immediate and unconditional return in line with international humanitarian law.
“We have also formally requested Malaysia—as Chair of ASEAN and a key facilitator of the ceasefire agreement—to act as mediator. We further urge the Thai authorities to expedite the return of our military personnel,” she said.
The spokesperson emphasised that the Ministry of National Defence and the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces (RCAF) remain resolute in their commitment to never leave any soldier behind, regardless of circumstances.
As of this morning, Cambodia has received the body of one fallen soldier, while 20 others remain in Thai custody, she confirmed.
