Preah Sihanouk Provincial Governor H.E. Mang Sineth met with U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Ms. Bridgette L. Walker this morning to discuss bilateral cooperation, economic development, and historical ties between Cambodia and the United States.
Held at the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Hall, the courtesy visit underscored the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
H.E. Mang Sineth expressed his gratitude to U.S. President Donald J. Trump for his role in securing a ceasefire in the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict, and for his ongoing peace efforts.
During the meeting, H.E. Governor highlighted Preah Sihanouk’s strategic importance and economic potential. He described the province’s extensive 175-kilometre coastline, 32 islands, and robust infrastructure, which includes three international ports, a high-speed expressway, and an international airport.
The governor noted that Preah Sihanouk is a key driver of the nation’s socio-economic development, with designated zones for logistics, urban commerce, luxury tourism, and agriculture.
The governor also recognised the long history of U.S. contributions to Cambodia, from the repatriation of cultural artifacts and trade partnerships to demining and educational support. He specifically mentioned the U.S. role in constructing National Road 4 in 1955, a vital highway connecting Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville, and noted that U.S. naval vessels have made 30 port calls to Preah Sihanouk since 2007.
Additionally, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cambodia permitted the Westerdam cruise ship to dock at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, with a personal welcome by former Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, despite other countries’ refusals.
In her remarks, Ms. Walker thanked the governor for his hospitality and reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to regional peace and stability. She emphasised the U.S. government and private sector’s dedication to supporting Cambodia’s economic growth, with the goal of helping the nation achieve middle-income status by 2030 and high-income status by 2050. Beyond economic ties, she highlighted opportunities for collaboration in education, culture, military affairs, law enforcement, and public health.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Ms. Walker announced that the U.S. Embassy is planning numerous activities in Preah Sihanouk. These events will include a documentary screening on the recovery of Cambodian antiquities and commemorations of historical milestones, such as the construction of National Road 4 and the inauguration of John F. Kennedy Boulevard.
The meeting concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening the bilateral relationship, reinforcing the enduring friendship between Cambodia and the United States.
