H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, met with the newly appointed United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative to Cambodia, Mr. Enrico Gaveglia, at the Ministry’s office here on Aug. 27 afternoon.
In their discussions, Minister Sophalleth commended the long-standing and productive partnership between Cambodia and UNDP, highlighting its significant contributions to the nation’s sustainable development and environmental conservation.
The Minister noted that the tangible results of this cooperation have received strong endorsement from Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, with plans to formally present these achievements at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.
H.E. Eang Sophalleth detailed a key priority of the Royal Government’s cross-sectoral environmental strategy: empowering local communities with knowledge and entrepreneurial skills. This initiative aims to foster grassroots sustainable development, transform local livelihoods, and transition communities from deforestation practices to becoming active guardians of forest resources.
In response, Mr. Gaveglia reaffirmed UNDP’s commitment to supporting these innovative environmental programs. He emphasised their dual benefit in improving community welfare while strengthening national resilience to climate change.
The UNDP Representative pledged the agency’s continued close collaboration with the Ministry to mobilise resources and develop diversified financing mechanisms, ensuring the long-term sustainability and impact of these projects for the people of Cambodia.
