Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, on Monday held bilateral talks with Hon. László Kövér, Speaker of the National Assembly of Hungary, at Munkácsy Hall, Budapest, during her official and friendly visit to Hungary.
The two parliamentary leaders stressed the importance of strengthening ties and enhancing mutual trust, respect, and understanding through closer parliamentary and people-to-people exchanges.
Cambodia and Hungary reaffirmed their strong friendship and commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including the economy, science and technology, agriculture, education, culture, diplomacy, and politics, for the mutual benefit of their peoples.
Both sides agreed to continue close cooperation and mutual support in maintaining peace and stability at both national and international levels, emphasising that peace is the foundation of socio-economic development.
On behalf of the Cambodian delegation, Samdech expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the people, government, and parliament of Hungary for their steadfast support to Cambodia since the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1979.
Samdech Khuon Sudary also recalled her personal connection to Hungary, where she studied media and journalism in Budapest in the early 1980s under Hungarian assistance.
Samdech also praised Hungary’s international role in promoting global peace, including its efforts to contribute to peace between Russia and Ukraine. She highlighted that Hungary serves as a key bridge connecting Europe and Asia, fostering dialogue, stability, and cooperation between the two regions.
For its part, Hungary emphasised that Cambodia is an important partner in Asia and among the most dynamic developing economies in the region.
Samdech Khuon Sudary also briefed her counterpart on the recent peace agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening regional stability. She noted that the implementation process should be closely monitored by both sides and with the attention of the international community to ensure lasting success.
Hungary congratulated Cambodia on the achievement, calling the accord a landmark peace deal that could pave the way for long-term reconciliation and stability between the two neighboring nations. Hungary further expressed its support for the peace process and affirmed its intention to continue monitoring developments.
Before concluding, Samdech Khuon Sudary extended an invitation to Hon. László Kövér to pay an official visit to Cambodia at a mutually convenient time.
